What changed

  • Serializes parent delegation and completion across VS Code extension hosts with consistent store-before-file lock ordering.
  • Rejects stale completion and conversation read failures before metadata, history, teardown, or parent resume can overwrite a newer handoff.
  • Persists parent conversation files before completion metadata and exact-restores both task records, caches, write-through state, and child recoverability when the finite handoff fails.
  • Propagates delayed file-lock compromise before destructive renames and retains the recoverable backup when ownership or rollback fails.
  • Extends the bounded lifecycle verifier with a two-host C-to-D handoff protocol model covering parent locking, conversations, record writes, live handoff, stale rejection, and compensation.
  • Adds deterministic regression coverage for production-order atomic updates, rollback restoration, parent-lock contention, and post-lock recovery callbacks.

Why this change was made

Multiple Zoo Code windows could interleave an old child completion with a newer delegation, orphaning the newer child and leaving attempt_completion unable to return. The failure was reproduced deterministically; the repository now retains the historical unsafe witness and verifies the fixed protocol through its existing lifecycle:model-check command.

Impact

Subtasks now return only to the parent handoff that still owns them. Concurrent activity in another window cannot replace a newer handoff with stale completion state or history. Transient read, write, rehydration, or lock failures leave the original delegation recoverable instead of partially committed.

The fixed formal model exhausts 45 states through depth 18 with zero errors across six invariants and four landmarks. The unsafe protocol fixture explores 432 states and preserves the expected #1469 witness. The changed-code mutation workflow runs against 498 selected executable lines with no surviving or uncovered mutants.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved reliability when resuming delegated tasks across concurrent sessions.
    • Prevented stale child completions from overwriting newer delegation changes.
    • Added safer rollback and restoration when handoffs or persistence operations fail.
    • Improved protection against concurrent file updates and compromised file locks.
    • Preserved unrelated pending actions during delegation transitions.
  • Improvements

    • Added options to update task history in memory without immediately saving.
    • Added support for aborting tasks without persisting conversation messages when appropriate.
    • Improved consistency of parent and child task states during handoffs.

Walkthrough

Task persistence now coordinates cross-instance delegation handoffs with file locks, disk guards, rollback, cache synchronization, and stale-ownership checks. Delegation transitions restore task and conversation state after failures. Concurrency tests, lifecycle documentation, and mutation-test selection were expanded.

Full details: Persistence Integrity

Explanation

Caller-held task-file locks lose compromise protection during persistence writes. lockJsonFile records compromise state and safeWriteJson checks it before renames, but safeWriteJson(..., { lockAcquired: true }) uses a no-op release object with no compromise accessor. withTaskFileLock then reuses that mode in atomicReadAndUpdate and atomicUpdatePair (TaskHistoryStore.ts:1034-1042, 1079-1087, 1172-1184) and the delegation completion path uses it while the outer lock is held (ClineProvider.ts:253-254, 4318-4347). If proper-lockfile reports compromise during streaming or before commit, the inner write can still rename stale data over another host's update; the outer release only reports the error afterward. This can corrupt parent or child history. The new tests cover compromise for independently acquired locks, but only test a caller-held lock with no compromise state (safeWriteJson.locking.spec.ts:271-294).

Resolution

Propagate the outer LockRelease compromise accessor into every caller-held safeWriteJson operation, or make the lock-scoped write API accept a lock handle rather than only lockAcquired: boolean. Check the accessor before backup and commit renames, skip destructive writes after compromise, preserve any recoverable backup, and reconcile the cache after failure. Add regression coverage for a compromise during a caller-held write and verify that the target remains unchanged and the failure is surfaced.

Full details: Lifecycle Resource Cleanup

Explanation

A changed safeWriteJson failure path can leak filesystem backup artifacts. When the target is renamed to .bak_*, lock ownership is then compromised, and another owner replaces the target, the new code skips rollback and no longer unlinks actualTempBackupFilePath. The function releases the lock but leaves the backup indefinitely. The added locking test explicitly confirms that the backup remains, and no production cleanup path exists for these files. Repeated compromised writes can accumulate artifacts.

Resolution

Add an explicit cleanup policy for retained .bak_* files. For example, prune stale backup files during task-store initialization after a safe retention period, while retaining recent backups needed for recovery. Ensure cleanup cannot remove a backup still associated with an active recovery operation.

Formal verification is integrated and pushed at 4bdaf48e4, rebased directly on current main (ca8a22f1).

The existing pnpm lifecycle:model-check flow now runs a protocol-specific two-host explorer after the generic shared-store model. It models host A’s stale completion for C, host B’s replacement D, the shared parent transition lock, UI/API conversation writes, parent/C record writes, live handoff installation, stale rejection, and exact compensation.

  • historical unsafe protocol: 432 states, max depth 18, 1 expected [BUG] Cross-window stale subtask completion can orphan a newer child #1469 error, 3 invariants, 3/3 landmarks;
  • fixed protocol: 45 states, max depth 18, 0 errors, 6 invariants, 4/4 landmarks;
  • bounds: depth 20, state budget 25,000;
  • exact unsafe witness retained from stale C scheduling through B’s D handoff and A’s stale parent overwrite.

The fixed model proves within those bounds that active linked C/D ownership matches the exact parent pointer, D ownership cannot be cleared by stale C completion, and partial conversation/record/live-handoff bundles are not observable without the parent lock. Documentation explicitly excludes crash consistency, failed compensation, unlocked readers, and liveness.

Validation and CI are green: full tests, lint, typecheck, compile-integrated lifecycle verifier, test:mutation-ci, changed-code mutation-diff, Linux/Windows unit, e2e, CodeQL, build, visual, and Codecov. Patch coverage remains 100.00% (228/228). CodeRabbit has 11 resolved threads, 0 unresolved, with no new actionable findings on this head. The draft review gate is the only pending status.

Addressed all three new CodeRabbit findings across the two latest reviews and pushed 76e133453 on top of current main (134923e15). Provider-removal tests now have the correct suite ownership; matching and unset pending-action paths prove complete parent-child delegation and scheduled child startup; failed or compromised safe writes retain and log the only recoverable backup without overwriting another owner's target. Focused provider tests passed (15/15), focused safe-write tests passed (32/32), full tests passed (8,273), and lint, typecheck, lifecycle models, and the 498-line changed-code mutation gate are green. GitHub CI, CodeQL, both Codecov patch contexts, and CI mutation-diff pass. All review threads are resolved. The PR remains draft, so the aggregate review gate is pending and CodeRabbit skipped a final-head review under draft/label configuration; its latest completed review covered 8ef1483e7 and the resulting thread is resolved. Visual proof is unavailable because the proof step timed out and was not retried. See the task.

TaskHistoryStore.writeTaskFile to avoid the broad unknown double assertion: use
a guarded Reflect.get helper typed with writeTaskFile’s complete four-parameter
signature, and apply it to both assertions. Preserve the test’s existing
delegation behavior while ensuring signature changes are caught by type
checking.

In `@src/core/webview/ClineProvider.ts`:
- Around line 4015-4017: Update the read-error handling in the parent
conversation snapshot flow around originalParentClineMessages so rejected reads
propagate the error instead of assigning []; leave delegation retryable and
avoid saving a snapshot after failure, while preserving the normal [] result for
missing or valid empty files.
- Around line 4227-4229: Make the handoff around createTaskWithHistoryItem
compensatable: if parent rehydration fails after atomicUpdatePair commits,
restore the original parent and child records while the parent lock is held so
retries see the pre-transition state. Alternatively, move the fallible
rehydration before the irreversible pair update, while preserving delegation
guards and stack lifecycle behavior.

In `@src/utils/__tests__/safeWriteJson.locking.spec.ts`:
- Line 18: Update the compromised-lock handling in lockJsonFile and the
safeWriteJson flow to track compromise state throughout the lock lifetime,
rather than relying on a synchronous throw from onCompromised. Ensure delayed
onCompromised callbacks are handled without uncaught exceptions and cause the
appropriate write/lock operation to fail, then update the locking test to invoke
the callback asynchronously after lockJsonFile resolves.

- Line 277: Add behavior-focused assertions to the test covering the
pending-action mismatch so it verifies the rollback calls, including the

mutation-only behavior without relying on this spec-file shim.

In `@src/utils/safeWriteJson.ts`:
- Line 53: Update lockJsonFile() and safeWriteJson() to expose lock-compromise
state and abort before each destructive rename once ownership is lost, including

4205-4207: 🩺 Stability & Availability

Do not raise a lock re-entry issue here. The delegation flow keeps the child as the sole active task. The callback removes that child with saveMessages: false before rehydration, so the registry is empty. The profile-specific restore also sets persistTaskHistory: false. No nested TaskHistoryStore.upsert() is reached on this path.

In `@src/__tests__/provider-delegation.spec.ts`:
- Line 220: Strengthen the delegation test around the pendingAction assertion to
verify completed delegation behavior: assert the parent status, child identity,
and that child.run executes. Add behavior-focused coverage for both normal and
false/unset paths, rather than relying only on preservation of pendingAction.
